What is your role at SNACC?
Director of SNACC, Head of Curriculum, Co-Founder
What is your background?
I grew up in Newburgh, NY. I attended Marist College where I studied psychology and special education. I was a school teacher in Newburgh where I taught first and second grade. When I moved to NYC, I taught sixth grade English. Currently, I work as a holistic nutritionist/wellness practitioner for my company, Yogaveda Health & Healing.
What makes you passionate about the work that SNACC does?
My experience of working in Title One schools, where breakfast and lunch are served without charge, led to my dream of creating SNACC. Despite the intervention of the meal program at my school, I witnessed two events: older students starting the day with chips and soda, and these students subsequently falling asleep during class. The proper fuel necessary to learn was being replaced by empty calories that contributed to low energy levels and difficulty paying attention. How can students be expected to academically perform without the support of nutrient dense diets? SNACC emerged from this challenge. I am excited to provide rich nutritional meals to students and also give them the tools to create healthy meals outside of school, leading to better diet choices. I hope the opportunity to take meals home will empower students to spread the mission of SNACC beyond the individual.
What is your favorite healthy ingredient and what is your favorite dish to cook with it?
My favorite healthy ingredient is broccoli rabe. My favorite dish to make with it is pasta topped with garlic, olive oil, and broccoli rabe! Adding a little bit of Parmesan cheese makes it even more delicious!
